5.1. What are Cookies?
HTTP cookies are small files sent to your Device from the sites you visit on the web. They may also be called web cookies, internet cookies or browser cookies. With each new visit to the sites you previously visited, your browser sends Cookies back to the sites you visited, allowing these sites to remember information about your previous access and function more efficiently.
The Cookies may provide information other than that relating to the way in which you are using a particular website.
Depending on their different purposes, Cookies can be classified into:
a) Strictly necessary cookies
These are Cookies essential for the website to function properly.
They are generally only triggered in response to actions carried out by the user, such as, for example, when accessing a secure area of a website.
b) Functional cookies
They are Cookies par excellence, as they allow the website to store information about the user, allowing the website to memorize the way in which the user likes the website to work. A classic example of a situation where functional Cookies would be present would be when the user accepts the Cookies and privacy policy or even the “terms and conditions of use” of a site and the site memorizes this option, having it fulfilled in a next access.
c) Analysis and performance cookies
These are generally third-party Cookies, that is, those who host the website. Their function is to collect information about the use of the website and the profile of its users. They monitor the performance of the website, collecting anonymized data on the number of visitors, the geographic location from which the website is being accessed, the gender and age group of users, the number of pages visited and the time users spent in each of them.
d) Marketing and advertising cookies
These may be third-party Cookies or those of the Controller itself. They serve advertisements or offers, the content of which can be personalized. Its objective is to create a profile of users’ interests, inducing the generation of relevant advertisements in other web environments.
Although they do not store Personal Data, they can provide a unique identifier for the user’s browser or device accessing the World Wide Web. As explained above, the information obtained may be shared with third parties, in remarketing strategies.
Marketing and advertising cookies originating from commercial partners of the owner of a website are not under the control of that owner. Marketing and advertising Cookies have the advantage of directing user preferences, making the use of a given webservice more efficient. As a disadvantage, such Cookies can cause visual pollution and reduced navigability efficiency. In some cases, marketing and advertising Cookies are essential for the functioning of the website, such as, for example, on e-commerce sites.
In addition to being classified according to their purpose, Cookies can also be classified according to:
a) their retention time in the browser, in persistent (or long-lasting) or transient (or session) Cookies: transient Cookies disappear when the browser is closed, something that does not happen with persistent Cookies, since the latter are stored even after closing and restarting the browser; Persistent cookies can be programmed with a specific expiration date;
b) to their originator, in first-party or third-party Cookies: first-party Cookies are set by the developer/owner of the website you are using; Third-party cookies are originated and administered by other companies, such as service providers and commercial or business partners of the website owner;
c) to its extension, in supercookies or common (ordinary) Cookies: a supercookie originates from a higher-level domain (.com, .com.br, for example), while an ordinary Cookie originates from more restricted domains and lowest hierarchical level (google.com, for example).
